Postcard of Guernsey

1815

The Duke of Richmond Hotel stands on the site originally occupied by what is generally accepted to be Guernsey’s oldest hotel - in 'Berry’s History of Guernsey', dated 1815, there is a charming engraving of Grover’s Hotel, and this appears to be on the exact site of the present building.

1902

History does not record how long Grover’s Hotel remained in business, but by the turn of the century it had been replaced by the Richmond Boarding House. A "Chamber of Commerce Guide" of 1902 stated that the Richmond was the principal boarding house in the Channel Islands.

By the 1930s it had blossomed into full licensed hotel premises known as the Richmond Hotel.

1960

After the Nazi occupation during the Second World War it became a hotel again and extensive plans were made for enlargement in 1960. This resulted in various improvements throughout the following decade.

1970

Virtually rebuilt in 1969 by its new owners, Delrich Hotels, it re-opened as The Duke of Richmond Hotel in 1970. The hotel was named after the Third Duke of Richmond, who as Master of the Ordnance had commissioned the famous map of the island of Guernsey in 1769.

Further extensive development resulted in the building of a new sea-view facing block for its rear rooms, four of which had balconies. Various upgrades and on-going refurbishment continued throughout the next 34 years.

2011

Red Carnation Hotels acquired the property in 2011 and lovingly restored The Duke, making connections with the local community and creating exceptional guest experiences.

The power of passion

"The Duke of Richmond Hotel joined the collection in 2011. I was thrilled to join the team as General Manager in 2018, after working with our sister property in Guernsey, The Old Government House Hotel.

There are many aspects of my role that I find rewarding. I was delighted to oversee a project that added two luxury apartments to our hotel. Dating back to 1865, the townhouse apartments have been lovingly restored offering two split-level, two-bedroom apartments with spectacular views.

I love getting out to meet our local producers. We source as many regional ingredients as possible to feature on our menus, sharing our delicious Guernsey produce with our guests - from Herm Oysters to local artisan gin.

We further support local producers by providing immersive experiences for our guests. Hop on a RIB across to Herm to see the oyster beds, wander around the Rocquette Cider orchard, meet the team at le Hechet Farm for ice cream and return to The Duke to sample an organic charcuterie platter from Wallow Farm.

We are also surrounded by stunning cliffs, offering walks for all abilities and beautiful beaches with an impressive sea swimming community for those brave enough to take a dip. Our team takes pride in the Guernsey landscape, taking part in regular beach cleans.

I feel proud to be part of a group that makes every guests’ holiday matter and we have a superb team to make that happen."

- Gareth Byrne, General Manager
